Anatomy of a Book Trailer

Cut!

After watching a few professionally produced book trailers on YouTube, the thought occurred to me that I could attempt it myself. What did I have to lose? Having created a video about adoption using iMovie (and helped by those Apple genius guys available at the store) I was able to learn basic techniques and pull together a fairly decent video. But was that different from a book trailer? Yes. And no.

So, here is my cover, above. And there is my daughter, the one to whom I dedicated my book, below. A perfect subject for my trailer, don’t you think? Well, I’m sure you’ve figured out I had her in mind all along. ☺️ But the similarity is striking.

I got to work and found a green screen setup from our local library. My kind husband agreed to set up the screen and the lights. Why a green screen? I thought you’d never ask.
It allows one to film a subject, then superimpose the image on top of any backdrop. Since The Heart Changer takes place in the desert, I found a few images from our own trip to the Middle East, and one free image on Canva.

When we superimpose Olivia onto my chosen background  . . .voilá! Instant ambiance.

After gathering my backgrounds, images and videos, now I needed to consider how I was to relay the story in only a few enticing words and phrases. Should it be purely audio? Or audio with some text across the screen?

In this case, I would be showing AND telling (which is permissible in a book trailer). Three types of copy came to mind: endorsements I've received, memorable quotes or descriptions from my story, and segments from The Heart Changer's cover copy. I used all three. Here are two examples. . .

Not sure I like the flowery title above, but I can easily change it. Now, I can add music or sound effects - galloping horses, Middle Eastern music, or a friend's composition.

I have many adjustments to make, but things are falling into place. It's a challenging but fun project. And be assured I will share it with you when I am done!

And if you would like to help me pass the word about The Heart Changer, whether by word of mouth or social media, sign up below. You'll have the opportunity to get a complimentary ebook to read ahead of time, and I will guide you every step of the way. I'd be honored to have you join my book launch team!

Have you made a book trailer? Do you have a favorite one to share? Put the link in the comments below. I'd love to know what you think of my trailer so far. Have any suggestions? Again, let me know  below!

Well, you are way ahead of me on this. My publisher said no trailer :( Very cool with the green screen transformation!

Thanks, Tina. . .it’s still in progress, and won’t be as professional as others, but should hopefully provide readers with a good feel for my story. So happy I can use your endorsement!
